Microneedling

Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy (CIT), an aesthetic procedure meant to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen and other beneficial proteins in the deeper layers of the skin with minimal damage to the superficial layers.

It is a low-cost and minimally-invasive technique for treating multiple cosmetic and dermatologic conditions. Microneedling devices are considered medical equipment and are FDA-regulated, therefore they are usually handled by medical professionals.

The procedure involves inserting very fine, sharp, sterile needles into the skin in a systematic fashion. This, in turn, induces a natural, compensatory healing response which boosts production of collagen and elastin, both naturally occurring proteins which give structure and support to the tissues.

The body’s response to microneedling also activates cell turnover and skin regeneration. The results are plump, rejuvenated skin and improved appearance of scars, pigmentation areas or stretch marks.

Combined treatments

Microneedling is often used in combination with various serums, such as hyaluronic acid or antioxidants to deliver hydration to the deep skin and enhance collagen production. It can also be used with stem cells or other skin growth and regenerative factors.

When used in combination with PRP (platelet rich plasma), microneedling becomes a powerful tool for skin rejuvenation by making use of the beneficial components of your own blood.

Microneedling with PRP can only be delivered by a physician and requires a prior consultation. At Essenza by MD™ our Board- Certified physician will examine your skin to determine the appropriate treatment to achieve your desired results.

What to expect and do for best results

How to Prepare for My Microneedling Treatment?

To prepare for your microneedling treatment, please follow the following recommendations:

Do’s

  • Wear sunblock and avoid the sun in the week leading up to your treatment
  • Let us know if you use Accutane (isotretinoin), an acne medication in the last 6 months
  • Inform your provider if you are allergic to any of the anesthetic medications or topical creams used during your treatment
  • Inform your provider if you are taking medications to thin the blood or if you have a blood clotting disorder

Don’ts

  • Do not spend time in the sun for 24 hours leading up to your treatment
  • Do not wear make-up to your appointment
What Should I Expect Before, During and After Microneedling ?

Before

You will receive a comprehensive consultation with our physician to review your medical history, dermatological issues and to determine your treatment goal and number of sessions needed.

Your skin will be cleansed to remove any make-up or residue and numbing cream will be applied to decrease discomfort

During

The physician will begin treating your skin with the microneedling device. During this time, specialty ingredients such as serums are also applied, if needed. As the procedure continues, your skin may become red and feel tight and inflamed. This is expected and it usually resolves after the treatment.

After

It is best to wait up to 4 hours after your treatment before washing your face or applying anything else to the skin.

Your skin may feel tight and sensitive for up to 3 days after the treatment. That is normal and not a cause of concern. If the skin continues to feel irritated you can apply OTC 1% hydrocortisone cream.

Microneedling induces increased skin turnover, as a result you will notice peeling and flaking of the skin for the first three to five days after treatment. Avoid picking or rubbing the skin. We recommend that you apply a delicate moisturizer during this time and avoid sun exposure and strenuous exercise.

If you are experiencing discomfort, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to decrease pain. It is best that you avoid NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin or Naproxen as these medications can interfere with the body’s response to the microneedling

Who Should Get Microneedling?

Microneedling is indicated for treatment of scars due to acne or surgical procedures, stretch marks, disorders of pigmentation and overall skin rejuvenation. The procedure is generally well tolerated and considered safe for all skin types and colors. In fact, it is an excellent tool for resurfacing of skin with high melanin content.

The only contraindications to microneedling are:

  • Presence of acne
  •  Active infections on the skin
  • Blood clotting issues
  • Impaired wound healing

Our physician will discuss your medical history and current state of health with you and will determine if you are medically cleared for microneedling treatment.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Microneedling?

The most commonly reported reactions to microneedling are localized bleeding, bruising, redness, tightness, itching and peeling of the skin. These usually go away in a few days to weeks after the procedure.
The procedure itself is associated with minimal pain and discomfort. This is minimized with the application of topical anesthetic to numb the skin. Your provider’s experience and technique is key to having a comfortable experience.

Other, less commonly reported side effects include:

  • Micropigmentation: this is more common in colored skin and tends to disappear after a few weeks
  • Infection: can occur if microneedling is performed in the presence of an active site of infection, such as a pimple or acne outbreak as bacteria from the pimple can be spread to other parts of the skin. This is one of the reasons why it is very important to have a medical evaluation prior to initiating treatment
  • Allergic reactions can occur to the anesthetic or one of the serums used in combination with microneedling. If this occurs, you should let the physician know immediately so that it can be treated appropriately
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do I Need?

Typically, a person will need between 4 to 8 sessions, spaced several weeks to months apart, for best outcomes. The amount and frequency of treatments is determined after a consultation with the physician.

When Will I See Results ?

Because microneedling works by stimulating the body’s natural healing response, it usually takes two to four weeks for the positive results of the treatment to become visible. However, in some individuals, a bright glow is experienced immediately. If you are worried about redness during the time that the skin heals, it is advisable to wear light make-up.

How Long Will the Results of Microneedling Last ?

Positive results of microneedling can last up to 6 months. Wait time between your treatments depends on your skin issues and treatment goals.
