What Are Fillers?
Dermal Fillers, also known as soft-tissue fillers, are injectable formulations used to add volume, fill space or augment certain features. They are commonly used to fill loss of volume around the eye zones, cheekbones, folds around the nose, mouth or chin and lips.
Most common dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring complex-sugar molecule, called polysaccharide. Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the skin and cartilage of the human body where it draws water and functions to cushion, lubricate, hydrate and repair tissue.
What Are Static Wrinkles?
With time, the body naturally loses HA and other essential components of skin and subcutaneous tissues such as collagen. This results in loss of elasticity and leads to sagging skin, folds and lines around the face and neck. Unlike dynamic wrinkles, these folds are permanent and not affected by movement of facials muscles, they are present at rest and thus called “static”.
Common static wrinkles include the “nasolabial folds” around the midface, the “marionette lines” around the corners of the mouth, sagging of the skin under the eyes and loss of volume in the cheeks.
Who Should Get Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are for anyone wishing to correct signs of aging like folds and wrinkles and turn back the clock on age-related volume loss around the face, or individuals who are looking to sculpt and define their facial features, such as lips.
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Depending on the type and brand of dermal filler uses, they can last between 6 to 18 months. Certain kinds of filler can last up to a few years. Having a thorough consultation with our physician is the best way to know which filler is right for you.
Are Fillers Safe?
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved for aesthetic procedures, when injected by a trained and experienced provider such as our doctor at Essenza by MD™ they are an excellent, non-invasive way to improve your appearance, correct imperfections and boost self-esteem.
Why Should I Get Fillers?
These are some of the reasons why you may want to opt for dermal fillers to achieve your desired look:
- Minimally invasive procedures: without the need for large incisions or surgery
- Minimal Pain: most fillers contain lidocaine, an anesthetic used to minimize pain and discomfort
- Long Lasting Results: depending on the filler, the results can last up to 18 months
- Minimal Downtime: resume daily activities immediately or after short waiting period
- Compatible with other treatments: dermal fillers can be combined with neurotoxin injections and other skin rejuvenation treatments for better results
- Natural-looking results: HA dermal fillers are formulated to feel and look natural and integrate well into the treatment area. When placed properly by an experienced injector, HA fillers can restore a youthful appearance and give subtle definition to certain facial features
Any Contraindication to Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are not indicated in individuals with the following conditions:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Bleeding or disorders of coagulation
- Use of blood-thinning medications
- Allergy to lidocaine or other ingredients of the filler
- Under the age of 21
What If I Don’t Like My Filler? Is it Reversible?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are easily reversible with a dissolving enzyme, called hyaluronidase. This agent can be injected in the areas of concern and correct or even fully dissolve your filler.
The truth about fillers
Myth: “It’s addictive”
Truth: Hyaluronic acid dermal filler do not contain any ingredients that are known to cause addiction. While routine maintenance treatments are recommended to preserve your desired look, the frequency of these treatments are entirely up to you. The filler itself will not cause addiction or withdrawal symptoms on discontinuation.
Myth: “I won’t look like myself” or “It looks fake”
Truth: Injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are formulated to integrate well with your body and, when done properly, your anatomy. The goal of dermal filler should be to enhance your natural features and restore lost volume without completely changing your expression.
The secret to a natural look with dermal fillers is obtaining a comprehensive evaluation and working with an experienced injector.
Myth: “You have to keep getting it”
Truth: Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body, it also naturally gets broken down by the body which means that your filled gets resorbed with time. How long it will take for your body to break down the filler depends on the kind of dermal filled you receive and your own body’s processing of it. When your filler is gone, it is entirely up to you if you wish you to place new filler.
